9th Century Niello and Gold Ring

This 9th century ring was found as part of the West Yorkshire Hoard. It is decorated using niello - a black substance made from a mixture of copper, silver and lead sulphites. Like the others found in the Hoard, this ring is large and was probably worn over gloves.
