The Borough of Morley, Mark II B Spitfire 1941
The funds to build this Mark II B Spitfire (P.8658) in 1941 were raised by the Mayor, Alexander Wilson, and townspeople of Morley in their 'Wings for Victory' Campaign - £5,000 was donated to the Ministry of Aircraft Production and in recognition the Ministry named the Spitfire 'Borough of Morley'. Many of the Spitfires, including this one, were produced at the Vickers Armstrong factory, Castle Bromwich, in the West Midlands at a cost of £12,000-14,000 each. The 'Borough of Morley' saw action in 1941 with 610, 15, 266, 124 and 54 squadrons before serving in 1942 and 1943 with Operational Training Units (58 and 61). It was finally scrapped on 2 November 1944.
