Passenger Certificate for Steam Ship, The Maid of Athens, 1899
The Maid of Athens was the steam boat that carried passengers on leisure trips around Waterloo Lake, Roundhay Park, Leeds. She was run as a commercial venue and owned by Mr James Johnson. The certificate licenses her to carry 84 passengers and two crew, and she is ‘not authorised to carry passengers anywhere else’. It was issued by the Board of Trade. When she got too old, it was too expensive to remove her, so she was intentionally scuppered and still lies at the bottom of the lake.
