Pocket, Early 19thC

Early 19th century pocket. At this time pockets were separate garments, tied around the waist and worn under the dress. Dresses had slits cut in the sides to allow access to the pockets. They were often the only way that women could carry personal possessions around.

The pocket has a slit in the front, rather than an opening at the top.
