Portrait of Charles Booth

Charles Booth (1840-1916) was concerned by contemporary social problems. He thought that charity work and philanthropists like himself – literally ‘love of people’, meaning people who helped others – could only do so much in addressing poverty. In order to try to find out what percentage of Londoners lived in poverty, Booth organised and funded comprehensive social surveys of London life.
