Grinton How Mill Peat Store and Flue
The Peat Store (on the left) stored fuel to use in the hearths. To dry out the peat quickly after cutting it from the moorland the store was heated by the fumes from the hearth as the flue was built along the back wall of the building. Note the discoloration of the lower wall due to the heating and lead fumes. The flue stretches for nearly 1 km up the hillside and would have had a chimney at the top when in use.
