Tree Shadows on the Park Wall, Roundhay, by John Atkinson Grimshaw, 1872
A road stretches from the foreground into the distance, with a wall running to its right, and a footpath alongside; a female figure walks on the path in the middle distance. The road and path are flanked by leafless trees which cast clearly defined shadows onto the wall. Where is she going? What time of year it is? How is she feeling?
John Atkinson Grimshaw was born on 6 September 1836 in a back-to-back in Park Street, Leeds. In 1861, at the age of 24, he left his job as a clerk for the Great Northern Railway to become a painter.
