Teachers' Notes

Resource created by LEEDS 2023, Dr Briony Thomas (University of Leeds) and ArtAngel.

This resource is for KS2 and KS3 st udents and was developed to complement the Artangel exhibition, “And She Built A Crooked House.”  Using drawing as a tool to expand knowledge and unravel mathematic theories, artist Gemma Anderson-Tempini’s large-scale installation took over a Victorian house in Headingley, Leeds, from October 2023-January 2024 as part of Leeds 2023 Year of Culture. In the rooms of the exhibition, audiences experienced different types of spaces and geometric shapes that explored the idea of different dimensions.

Curriculum Links

  • KS2 Art - Pupils should be taught to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials.
  • KS2 Maths (Geometry) - Pupils’ knowledge of the properties of shapes is extended at this stage to symmetrical and non-symmetrical polygons and polyhedra. Pupils extend their use of the properties of shapes. They should be able to describe the properties of 2-D and 3-D shapes using accurate language, including lengths of lines and acute and obtuse for angles greater or lesser than a right angle.

Activity Ideas

To complement the exhibition, a one hour workshop plan with activity sheet was developed, 'Image and build your own 4D polytope', which is available in the downloads section
